Henry Sinnamon (1861-1902)

Portrait of Henry Sinnamon
Facts

Henry Sinnamon was born May 6, 1861, in Franklin Township, Darke County, Ohio.  His parents, George and Isabel Stewart Sinnamon, were Irish immigrants, having arrived separately and married in Pennsylvania in 1851.  Henry was the youngest of seven children and one of three boys.  At the time of his birth, his parents were in their mid-thirties.  They were farmers.

At some point before 1872, Henry's father, George Sinnamon moved his family from Ohio to Howard County, Indiana.  They settled on forty acres in the northwest corner of Center Township, about three miles from downtown Kokomo.

The 1880 census found Henry Sinnamon, age 19, living at home with his parents and two sisters, Mary Jane, 24, and Emma, 20.  Henry was a farm laborer, probably on his father's farm.

Henry's father died in 1884, when Henry was twenty-two.  Around this time, Henry started acquiring land of his own.  He purchased 100 acres less than a mile from his father's farm.  A house stood on the land in 1877.  Perhaps this was the first home of the new family Henry would start in 1887.

Henry married Emma Culver October 26, 1887 in Kokomo.  She was the youngest daughter of David and Jane Adams Culver, farmers living on 320 acres three miles north of the Sinnamon farms, near Galveston, Indiana.  Emma was the first child of the family born in Indiana.  The family had come from Ohio after the Civil War, in which David Culver served as a quartermaster in the Ohio 5th Cavalry, mustering out as a captain in 1864.

Henry and Emma were wed by the "marrying preacher," Rev. Hayden Rayburn of the M. E. Church.  Rev. Rayburn had married over a thousand couples by the time he joined Henry and Emma.  Due to advancing age, the minister was no longer able to travel on horseback to marry couples in their homes as he had for decades, but conducted ceremonies at his North Washington Street home in Kokomo.  He charged $2.50 for the service, which included a lecture after the ceremony.

Henry and Emma worked at farming, owning land in Center and Clay Townships.  One crop Henry grew was Irish potatoes.

Henry and Emma's first three children were boys.  Hurd was born June 30, 1888.  Howard followed on September 23, 1890 and Homer on February 21, 1892.

The couple's first daughter was named Grace.  She was born December 14, 1894, but suffered from a heart defect.  Grace died after twelve days and is laid to rest at Crown Point Cemetery in Kokomo in the Sinnamon family plot.  They marked her grave with wood, which is now gone.

Daisy was the couple's next daughter, and the last child of the family born in Howard County.  At some point after her birth on May 5, 1896, and before the birth of their next child, Jennie, on September 15, 1899, Henry and Emma moved their family to a farm near Monterey in Pulaski County, Indiana, where they were enumerated in the 1900 census.

Henry and Emma Sinnamon's last child, Dollie Marie, was born April 6, 1902.  Henry had been battling pulmonary tuberculosis (consumption), since the beginning of that year.  He passed away at home on June 2, 1902 at the age of 41.  His infant daughter followed him before the end of the month.  Dollie died of whooping cough on June 29, 1902.

Henry Sinnamon was laid to rest at Galveston Cemetery in Cass County, Indiana, in the Culver family plot.  The funeral had taken place at Emma's mother's home, near Galveston.

Maps

This plat map is from the 1877 Combination Atlas Map of Howard County, Indiana.

You can see that "G. Sinnamon" owned forty acres and that there was a structure in the

northwestern corner of the property, surrounded by trees.  There is a house there, today, but records show it was built in 1900 -- too recent to be the home of George or his son, Henry Sinnamon.

This map and others from the atlas are available in electronic or printed format from HistoricMapWorks.com.

Grandma Stone (Imogene Cahoe Stone)

  • She never met Henry Sinnamon, but he was her grandfather.  I wish I could have shared this research with her, but it's too late for that, now.  She was guarded when it came to family history and only shared bits and pieces with me.  But, I am thankful for what she did share.

Steve Pearson

  • Thanks to Steve Pearson for posting the portrait of Henry Sinnamon and other priceless family photos and information on Ancestry.com.  He is my second cousin, once removed, descending from Henry's wife, Emma, and her second husband.

Andrea Sinnamon

  • Thanks also to Andrea Sinnamon for posting the charcoal portrait of Henry Sinnamon and lots of great info on the Sinnamon family on Ancestry.com.  Andrea is married to one of the descendants of Henry's eldest son, Hurd.

Amy Russell, Head of Genealogy and Local History
     Kokomo-Howard County Public Library

  • Amy is an outstanding resource and has helped me so much with research.  I contacted her with a couple of questions about where I might find some records and she very kindly sent me marriage, legal, and other records that I didn't even know existed.  Thank you, Amy!

Elizabeth Titus, Clerk
Crown Point Cemetery (City of Kokomo Parks and Recreation Department)

  • Elizabeth sent me a map of the Sinnamon plot at Crown Point, database information, and advice on placing a marker or markers for the Sinnamon family, as the graves are currently unmarked.  She's extremely helpful.  Thank you, Elizabeth!
